The Obelisk Temple at Byblos

Byblos is famous for its temples - the Early Broze Age L-Temple and its later incarnation, the 2700 BC Obilesk Temple (pictured), are among the most visible on the site today. To avoid destroying this temple the archaeologists moved it, stone by stone, to a new location so that they could excavate the layers beneath it. We are fortunate as they preserved a unique temple centered around a rectangular block of stone personifying the diety being worshipped (we are still uncertain excatly which of the Caananite gods was worshipped here). Surrounding this central block are many obilesks which archaeologists assume were dedicatory gifts to the temple given by private individuals.
