The palace at Ugarit

A view over the Bronze Age palace at Ugarit in northern Syria. Ugarit was one of many trading towns (entrepots) lining the Syrian coast in the Late Bronze Age (1550-1200 BC). What makes Ugarit unique is that it was the first city to develop an alphabetic script that is a direct ancestor of our own system of writing.
