Hamadan (ancient Ecbatana)

The site of ancient Ecbatana (now known as Hamadan) is situated high in the Zagros Mountains in the west of Iran. This site was the capital city of the Medes, rulers of Iran prior to the Achaemenid Persians. Due to its strategic location, however, it remained the summer residence of the Achaemenids and later dynasties.
